The healthcare industry is increasingly becoming challenging
The healthcare industry is increasingly becoming challenging to leadership professionals to navigate as the dynamics of the healthcare management models faces rapid changes. Successful healthcare provision relies on the ability of healthcare professional working together to shape healthcare services delivery (Hepp et al., 2015). Leadership involves the process of motivating a group of individuals with a strategy to meet the organization’s objectives. In addition to requiring clinical skills, healthcare leaders have to exhibit business competencies and the required interpersonal and soft skills to develop a strong workplace that drives positive trends among employee engagement, involvement and retention. In the traditional setting, leaders within the healthcare sector had developed the mentality of healthcare as, ‘fee-for a service’, which is not effective in the modern healthcare provision that requires communication and listening skills and high emotional intelligence (Gamble, Peteraf & Thompson, 2014). Leaders within the modern healthcare facilities are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that they develop best talent of staff, nurses and physicians available (Noe, 2017). Equally, leaders need to understand the role of technology in ensuring safety, productivity and quality service provision within healthcare facilities.
Based on my personal experience, I used associate leadership to a boss kind of figure who merely provides directions to be implemented by the rest of the employees. However, over time, my understanding in leadership has changed over the years as I develop better understanding on leadership and management within the healthcare industry. In the modern environment, the sustainability of the healthcare facilities is hugely dependent on leadership and their ability to adapt to different changes. Equally, I have come to understand the role of leaders in development of a supportive workplace culture where teamwork and interpersonal relations are part of the workplace trends and culture. The leaders also tend to show high levels of emotional understanding with all employees that do not have any impact on their professional relationships. I have also gained an understanding on the role of leaders in dealing with diversity within the communities in which they operate. The healthcare leaders need to understand their patient population diversity and make necessary provisions for ensuring diversified service provision among healthcare providers. Still, criticism within the healthcare sector is unavoidable hence; a good leader should be able to communicate change to all affected stakeholders to eliminate fear or uncertainties.
Great healthcare leaders have to understand how to best utilize their healthcare professionals, develop skills while creating opportunities for career growth and development opportunities. Health outcomes and levels of patient satisfaction define the primary objective of the healthcare industry. Even in scenarios where healthcare facilities have limited resources, leaders have to be creative in resource allocations and find unique ways of motivating teams to providing superior health care services.
The decision making process within the healthcare industry is critical as it sometimes may require spontaneous actions that face high risks hence the leaders should have the capacity of handling stressful environment without impulsive reactions that can create additional stress. Healthcare employees experience huge burnout levels hence leaders should understand how to motivate employees to try to balance between work and life.
A survey carried out by (Hepp et al., 20115) on human resources professionals established that; over 67% of professionals within healthcare facilities can rate the leadership of their facilities as good or even excellent. Surprisingly, these leaders were ranked highly on knowledge, competence and experience but they struggled due to poor behavioral skills especially emotional intelligence. The term emotional intelligence refers to the ability of leaders to monitor their emotions and employee’s emotions as well to guide their actions, thinking and behavior. Healthcare involves life and death scenarios that require leaders who are emotionally resilient as the stakes in healthcare are challenging and more complex.
